Distribution channels for each temperature – £ millions in 2003

Distribution channels for each temperature - £ millions in 2003

Distribution channels for each temperature most definitely differ and suppliers need to take account of this.

Frozen foods, which require tight temperature control throughout the distribution chain, rely much more heavily on delivered wholesalers – who handle almost 70% of frozen food supply by value – than other products. Ambient foods, on the other hand, are much more likely to be sourced by operators through cash and carries than other temperatures. More than 20% of ambient foods are purchased from cash and carries compared with less than 10% of short-life chilled (or “fresh”) products.

But this is only the tip of the iceberg since specific products within each temperature – such as oils, coffee, snacks and many more – have their own unique distribution profile.
