Market Shares 2003

A couple of distribution companies – Brake and 3663 – have a turnover in
excess of £1 billion but they only account for just under a quarter of the market.
At the other extreme, a large number of small players - often with a turnover of
less that £5 million - together account for over half of all food by value
However, many of these smaller players are concentrated in the “fresh” food
market – meat, fish, produce etc – where their larger competitors tend not to
operate at the moment. But even if the small fresh food specialist distributors
are
excluded, smaller distributors still account for a third of the market.
The message is that distribution is fragmented despite the presence of some
very large delivered wholesalers.
