Key Industry Perspective (KIP)
Optimum Food Service Supply Chain Initiative (OFSCI)
What is it?
OFSCI was formed to:
- Define standards and technologies for use in foodservice logistics and supply
chain
- Adopt a leadership role through mapping the operational steps for developing
and agreeing standards
It is essentially a platform for improving supply chain efficiency in the food
service sector.
Who is involved?
The Food and Drink Federation, the Federation of Wholesale Distributors (FWD)
and a group of leading Out of Home businesses have worked together with
specialist consultants and service organisations such as e.centre.

Why do it?
The role of OFSCI is to develop standards to optimise the food and drink supply
chain to take out unnecessary cost out of the system. It looks at improving the
order/invoicing system; providing better product identification to enhance
electronic order processing (including web based transactions), and enabling the
prospect of data exchange. All these elements have major benefits for FDF members.
Developments in 2005
 |
 |
A successful conference held on the 20 January to bring members and interested
parties up to speed on progress; |
 |
 |
The development of a marketing/communications programme to communicate the
finding through out the foodservice sector, and |
 |
 |
The OFSCI Advisory Group has devised a new way of working which the Board
endorsed, e.g.
- company representatives rather than consultants should represent OFSCI at
external meetings, and
- the role of consultant to be focused on sales and marketing.
|
The development of standards and improvement of information flows is part of
OFSCI's remit but it is acknowledged that more supplier funding is needed if
OFSCI
is to take on further initiatives e.g. data project.
